Russell Brand was looking tired, sad and lonely last night as he left the hotel where he's currently staying on his own in New York.

Brand is in the Big Apple to host Saturday Night Live this weekend - as his wife on the other side of the U.S. is said to be seeking a marriage counsellor to help smooth over troubles in their marriage.

Husband and wife for just three months, Katy and Russell are living increasingly separate lives and the I Kissed A Girl singer has allegedly started asking friends to recommend a therapist.

Tight-lipped: The comedian has refused to comment so far on the rumours about his marriage

Just last week, Katy was insisting that all was rosy in the garden, saying: 'We’re not like the stereotypical joke of a married couple. I’m married to Russell Brand – I don’t just have sex once a week!'

But apparently, trouble between the couple first emerged when Brand tweeted an unflattering picture of his make-up free wife last month.

Katy then realised her relationship may need some attention, according to reports in Life & Style magazine.

Dog house: The Teenage Dream singer was said to be furious that her comedian husband tweeted an unflattering close-up picture of her wearing no make-up

Brand was the inspiration for her 'You think I'm pretty without any makeup on' lyrics in her Teenage Dream hit song.

The harsh early morning photo was swiftly taken down from Twitter but not before it had gone viral.

The high profile couple had enjoyed a whirlwind romance and became engaged after just four months of dating in 2009 having met at the MTV VMAs that year, which Russell hosted.

They married in a lavish six-day celebration in India ten months later.

Fireworks: Katy Perry and Russell Brand's three month marriage has reportedly hit a rocky patch just as she heads off on a nine-month world tour

'I want to have kids! I'm totally fine with saying that. I think some people are scared because they're worried it's going to ruin their career, but I want to live a full life'.

Katy says she believes she can have a balanced life: 'I think you can have it all. You just have to work really hard, because great things don't come easily.'

'Everyone's been told that marriage is hard work, and it is: You have to make time for things you love', she added.

The couple's public affection for each other has also apparently taken a nosedive.
The twitter-happy duo previously tweeted incessantly but Russell last sent his wife a Twitter message in November.
